그 신은 이루 형언할 수 없는 존재로 여겨졌다. 그 신의 화신인 신인(神人)의 이름이 고대
이집트에서는 오시리스(우시르), 고대 그리스에서는 디오니소스, 소아시아에서는 아티스, 시
리아에서는 아도니스, 페르시아에서는 미트라스, 로마 시대에는 바쿠스나 미트라스등으로
불렸다.

살루스티우스는 이렇게 썼다.

"모든 사람에게 신들의 진실을 가르치고자 하면 바보들은 배울 수가 없어서 철학을 싫어하게
되고, 잘 배우는 자는 게을러지게 된다. 반면에 신화 속에 진실을 숨겨 놓으면 바보는 철학
을 싫어하지 않게 되고, 잘 배우는 자는 열심히 연구하게 된다."

미스테리아 신화 속에 감춰진 영적 의미의 심연을 파헤치는 것이 미스테리아 철학자와 사제
